ELIZABETH CITY, NC – "If at first you don't succeed, try try again." And again…and AGAIN if you have to.
Nowhere has that mantra rang true than with the Hollins volleyball team.
On Oct. 1, Hollins picked up a three set sweep of Ferrum, giving them their 12th win of the season and, more importantly, tying the program record for wins in a season. And with nine matches left, the odds seemed pretty good that the record would tumble…the only question was, when?
Well, it may have taken 17 days and a couple of setbacks, but the 2019-20 Hollins volleyball team can finally ink their names in the history books after a 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-17) road win over Mid-Atlantic Christian.
Friday's win was a complete team victory with six different players registering at least three kills, nine players racking up digs, 15 service aces and six blocks.
Tyler Sesker led the way with seven kills while Kenna Esquibel added six and Hannah Arthur had five. Casey Mahan was the lead assist giver with 14 and Zoe Brooks had 12. Amanda Mink and Hannah Piatak had 10 of the team's 15 aces and Piatak also added 13 digs.
Kiki Speights led the charge at the net with 2.5 blocks.
Hollins will look to add to its season record with a pair of road matchups tomorrow. They'll face off with Washington and Lee at 1:15 before taking on VA Wesleyan at 3:30. Both matches will be played at VA Wesleyan.
