LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Hollins traveled to Lynchburg Wednesday night to square off with the Hornets in a key ODAC matchup.
Despite having leads throughout the second and third sets, Hollins couldn't hold onto them late as Lynchburg took the match 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-21).
How It Happened
Hollins came into Wednesday's match looking to build on its strong performance against Randolph-Macon last week. HU jumped out to an early lead before Lynchburg took control. Hollins was able to pull within two at 18-16, but the Hornets ended the set on a 7-2 run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Green and Gold let for the majority of the second set, but with Hollins leading 19-17, Lynchburg once again snatched the momentum back and went on an 8-1 run, taking set two 25-20, and taking a 2-0 lead.
The final set was deja vu all over again for Hollins as they led for a large chunk of the final set but once again, weren't able to close things out as LC took the final frame 25-21 to send Hollins to 12-10 overall and 2-5 in the ODAC.
Offensively, HU was led by Kenna Esquibel's nine kills.
Casey Mahan had a strong night, coming away with a double-double, producing 16 assists and 10 digs.
Defensively, Hannah Piatak continued to add to her impressive season total of digs by having a match-high 23.
Hollins will have six days off before they're in action again. They'll take on Emory and Henry next Tuesday at home for their final home match of the 2019 season. First serve is scheduled for 7 pm.
