Volleyball Picks up First Home Win

ROANOKE, Va. --  The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Even though two weeks have passed since Hollins and NC Wesleyan met on the volleyball court, the end result was the same: HU knocked off the visiting Bishops 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-15, 29-27).

How It Happened

NCW got out to an early 4-1 lead in set one but HU responded with a 6-0 run, highlighted by a Kiki Speights ace, a kill from Kenna Esquibel and two kills from Hannah Arthur, to take a 7-4 lead. NCW went on a run of their own, reeling off nine straight points to take a 13-7 lead. Hollins fought back and was able to tie it up late at 23, but the Bishops used a kill and an error to take a 1-0 lead.

Hollins responded in set two by scoring the first point and never looking back. Holding onto a five point lead at 13-8, the Green and Gold went on a 9-1 run to take a commanding 22-9 lead. NCW added a few points late but an Arthur kill put the set away and tied the match at one.

A big run in the middle of set three helped Hollins grab a 2-1 lead. With NCW trailing 15-14, HU spread the offense around, using kills from Amanda Mink, Charlie Vollmers and Tyler Sesker to pull ahead 23-14. A Speights kill ended the set and gave HU a 2-1 lead.

Both teams brought the intensity in the fourth and final set. The Bishops led for the majority of the set, having as big a lead as four at 14-10. With NCW leading 16-13, Hollins used three straight Bishop errors, along with a Sesker kill, to take a 17-16 lead and force a timeout. The two teams traded points and, twice, NCW served for the set, but Hollins wasn't interested in going to a fifth set. With the score tied at 27, NCW had an attack error and Mink added a kill to end the extended set, and the match.

Arthur led the way in kills for the second straight night, dropping 11. Mink added nine while Sesker had eight. Zoe Brooks was tops for HU in the assist column with 20 while Casey Mahan had 15. Defensively, Mink and Esquibel had 17 digs apiece and Hannah Piatak chipped in 15.
