ROANOKE, Va. – The Hollins volleyball team continued its home ODAC slate on Wednesday, welcoming Guilford to campus.
Both teams were very evenly matched but the Quakers took advantage of some HU errors, along with adding double-digit blocks, en route to a 3-1 (22-25, 13-25, 27-25, 21-25) win over Hollins.
How it Happened
In set one, HU jumped out to a quick 9-3 and 10-4 lead over Guilford but couldn't hold onto the advantage as the Quakers bounced back and took the first set 25-22.
The second set started out even, with HU falling behind by just three at 10-7, but GC ended the set on a 15-6 tilt to run away with set two.
Hollins fell behind early in set three but was able to rally to tie the score. Neither team could pull ahead by more than a point until late in the set when Hollins went on a 6-2 run to serve for the point. GC was able to tie the set and back-to-back kills from Kenna Esquibel gave the Green and Gold the set three win.
The final set was close throughout, with neither team gaining a large lead. With the Quakers clinging to a one point lead, they finished the match on a 4-1 run to take the final set, and the match.
HU was led offensively by Hannah Arthur, who finished the match with a season-high 15 kills. Esquibel had eight kills while Tyler Sesker and Amanda Mink added seven apiece. Casey Mahan led the charge with 20 assists and Zoe Brooks added 16.
Defensively, three players finished with double-digit digs, with Hannah Piatak's 16 leading the way. Mink and Mahan added 12 and 10, respectively.
Hollins will be back in action on Friday as they take on NC Wesleyan in the HU Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to start at 6 pm.
