GREENSBORO, NC – The Hollins volleyball team kicked off their 2019 season on Friday with a doubleheader in the Greensboro Invitational.
They dropped a 3-0 decision to Piedmont International before falling to host Greensboro 3-0 in the nightcap.
Vs Piedmont International
Hollins jumped out to an early lead in set one against PIU, using kills from Amanda Mink and Kiki Speights, along with a few PIU errors to pull ahead 7-4 and eventually, 8-6. The Bruins went on a 5-1 run, however, to take the lead. Hollins was able to pull within two late, at 22-20, but PIU reeled off three straight to take set one, 25-20.
The two teams traded points to start set two until a Hannah Arthur kill put Hollins ahead 7-6. But just like the first set, Hollins couldn't hold the lead as the Bruins took advantage of some costly Hollins errors to take the second set 25-18.
The third set stayed close, with the teams trading points again to 12-all. But PIU went on an 8-2 run to pull ahead and finished off Hollins with a 25-18 third set.
Offensively, Hollins was led by Speights' six kills while Mink, Arthur and Charlie Vollmers each chipped in three.
In the second match of the night, Hollins struggled with Greensboro in the first two sets, dropping them 25-16 and 25-18. In the third set, Hollins fought back but eventually fell 25-22, dropping them to 0-2 to start the season.
Hollins will return to the court on Saturday for day two of the Greensboro Invitational. They'll square off with Johnson University (Fla.) at 9 am before ending the road trip with a matchup against Mid-Atlantic Christian at 3 pm.
