Winston-Salem, NC - A long road trip begins for the Hollins volleyball team as they traveled to face Salem College on Thursday night. It marked the second time that the two teams met, Salem defeated the green and gold way back in the beginning of the season at the Maroon Classic. The match with the Spirits was the first of five consecutive in which Hollins would don their road uniforms.
Salem raced out to a 3-0 advantage and took 15 of the night's first 20 points, cruising to an opening set victory, 25-11. Once again Hollins would find themselves in an early hole as they fell behind by double-digits. However, the road team started to find some rhythm and cut the deficit in half, 14-19. Salem would not allow their guests to get any closer and took a 2-0 lead into the third frame, 25-17. Hollins would turn the tables on the Spirits in the third as this time, the visitors took and early advantage, 6-2. The lead would remain in tact until the mid-way point of the set. Salem would go on an 8-1 run to earn their fist advantage of the set, 16-13. The visitors would battle back to tie it up, 19-19, before the Sprits scored six of the final seven points to earn their second win over Hollins this season.
Courtney Chappell lead a balanced Hollins attack with five kills. Chappell added two more service aces to give the sophomore 56 for the season, currently leading the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Kiki Speights added four kills and Brie Faircloth led the team with 16 digs. Sarah Freeman handed out 12 helpers with Casey Mahan registering 10 digs while hitting at 40%.
Taylor Moulton led with 11 kills with Kathryn O'Connell adding seven kills while accounting for three of Salem's four blocks. Hannah Delcamp and Lauren Holman combined to amass 31 assists and Maggie Hawks added a match high 20 digs.
Hollins will continue on the road when they travel to Ferrum next Tuesday for a 7:00pm start.
