Virginia Beach, VA - The Hollins volleyball team made the four hour trek to the coast for a Saturday morning showdown with Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins came into the matchup as one of the best teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), currently third in the league, and Hollins would need a big effort to try to pull off the upset.

After winning the first point of the match, Hollins watched their hosts score 12 of the next 15 points to seize control of the first set. The green and gold would match the Marlins point for point but couldn't cut the deficit and fell, 25-11, in the opener. Set number two started with the teams exchanging points until Virginia Wesleyan pulled out to a three point advantage. Hollins stayed close but in the end the Marlins pushed their lead to 2-0. The third stanza was even closer as the two conference foes remained tied, 19-19, late in the set. The Marlins rattled off five straight points to put away their guests from Roanoke, 25-20.

Brie Faircloth led Hollins at the net with 11 kills on 29 attacks and an assisted block. Charlie Vollmers added five kills with Kiki Speights and Courtney Chappell recording four kills apiece. Sarah Freeman handed out 19 assists while Hannah Piatak registered 11 digs.

11 different Marlins combined for 39 kills. Emilee Pierson led Virginia Wesleyan with 17 assists and nine digs.

Hollins will return home for a pair of non-conference games on Monday and Tuesday. Trinity (D.C.) will be the first opponent for a 6:00pm start on Monday night.
