Strong Start For Hollins

Roanoke, VA - The Hollins volleyball team looked to make it two in a row on Wednesday night when they welcomed fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member, Emory & Henry to campus. Hollins was in search of her first ODAC win, a win that would push the home team past the Wasps in the conference standings.

The visitors took control of the set early by opening the frame on a 4-0 run. Hollins will slowly cut the deficit and at the mid-way point, tie the score at 12-12. The hosts would take four of the next five points and try to pull away from Emory & Henry. However, the Wasps would keep it close and the match would remain tied at 23-23. Hollins put the pressure on their guests and forced a pair of hitting errors to close out the set, 25-23 and take a 1-0 lead. The Wasps would once again open an advantage by taking five of the first six points of the second stanza and force a Hollins timeout. After seeing their lead cut to two, 15-13, the Wasps ended the set on a 10-3 spurt to even the match at a set apiece. Set number three was a carbon copy of the previous set, E&H took and early lead, Hollins battled back, the Wasps pulled away late, 25-14. After going back and forth throughout the first half of the frame, Emory & Henry earned the first lead of the set, 18-13. The home team wouldn't quit and made one last run to pull to within three, but couldn't get any closer as the Wasps went home with a 3-1 ODAC win.

Courtney Chappell recorded double-digit kills, 11, and added three more service aces to her league leading total, 42. Brie Faircloth had nine kills and 15 digs while Charlie Vollmers and Kiki Speights each added six kills and a solo block. Sarah Freeman handed out 25 assists to go with her four kills and 11 digs.

Ali Singleton and Tori Holmberg registered 15 kills apiece as E&H enjoyed a 49-37 advantage at the net. Setter Sam McCauley assisted on 44 points and Lauren Coolidge posted 21 digs. 

Hollins will wrap up the month with a three match road swing before returning home to face the ODAC defending champion Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon on October 3rd.
