Hollins Serves Up 1-0 Start

Roanoke, VA - The 2017 edition of the Hollins volleyball team took the court in a tri-match to kick off the season. Hollins would welcome Wesleyan (Ga.) in the opener before facing Wilson College later in the afternoon.

The young Hollins squad got the match off to a quick start, taking the first four points of the new campaign. However, the Wolves would battle back to tie the match at 9-9. After the two teams traded points, Sarah Freeman took the ball behind the service line with the first set knotted at 11-11. By the time Wesleyan scored their next point, Hollins had rattled off 12 straight to take control of the opener and go on for a 25-13 victory. The home team kept the momentum by taking seven of the first 10 points of set number two. Hollins would enjoy a 10-3 kill advantage en route to going up two sets to love, 25-11. The third, and final, set saw the visitors from Georgia score the fist two points. The lead would be short-lived as Hollins continued to dominate from the service line and at the net, earning a 3-0 sweep of the Wolves.

The final statistics would see Hollins serve up 23 aces to go with their 35-17 advantage in the kill department. Brie Faircloth led the offensive attack with 11 kills on her 21 attempts. Sophomore Courtney Chappell added nine kills, seven service aces, and five digs. Freeman ended the match with seven service aces, three kills, and 12 assists while Casey Mahan chipped in four service aces and a team high 13 helpers.

Jimea Dunn and Malae Fiaseu each registered six kills and Catherine Heape recorded 10 assists to lead the Wolves.

Hollins would look to make it a clean sweep in the finale when they would play Wilson College.
