Va. Beach, VA - The Hollins lacrosse team went looking for their first ODAC win of the season when they made a trip to the east coast of Virginia to face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
Virginia Wesleyan jumped on their visitors from the west by netting a trio of goals in the game's opening minutes. Hollins cut the lead when senior Jessie Deese (Cary, NC) was awarded a free position shot. Deese promptly beat the Marlins keeper to put Hollins on the board. The momentum was short lived as Wesleyan ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 14-1 advantage into the break.
Hollins responded after the break when Bonnie Jo Blevins (Mars Hill, NC) scored her second goal of the season. However, Hollins could get no closer and as the final horn sounded, Virginia Wesleyan had secured a 19-2 ODAC victory.
In addition to scoring her sixth goal of the season, Deese had one of her best games of the season in the draw circle by picking up five draw controls. Blevins added three draw controls while Christina Havrila (Ruckersville, VA) led the team with five shots and three ground balls. Keeper Emily Lowther (Woodbridge, VA) registered six saves in the loss.
Megan Shallock led the Marlin offense with four goals and Tianna Garland added three scores and an assist. Taylor Simon handed out a game high five assists while a pair of Marlins combined for seven saves.
Hollins will be back on Moody Field on Wednesday afternoon when they welome Randolph College to town. The game with the WildCats is scheduled to begin at 4:30pm.
