Cold Fourth Quarter Dooms Hollins in Loss to Lynchburg

ROANOKE, Va. - The basketball gods giveth and the basketball gods taketh away.

After trailing by ten halftime, Hollins used a 27-13 third quarter to take a four point lead into the final quarter of Wednesday's ODAC opener against Lynchburg. But this is the part where the taketh away happens. Lynchburg responded, outscoring the Green and Gold 25-8 in the fourth quarter to drop Hollins 73-60.

How It Happened

After a slow offensive start saw Hollins get down 12-4 late in the first quarter, a three from Kayla Surles and layups from Yasmine Tyler and Sydney Strange brought Hollins (1-2, 0-1 ODAC) to within one to end the first quarter. It was all Lynchburg (3-2, 1-0 ODAC) in the second quarter, however, as the Hornets  turned a one-point lead into a 10 point lead with a 23-14 second frame.

After the break, Lynchburg built their lead to 12 and held a 39-29 lead when Hollins started chipping away. Using a 17-7 run, Hollins tied it up on a Kayla Surles jumper and took their first lead of the night on a Chesslyn Owens running floater. A Serena Lytton and-one and a Lenah Clements free throw put HU ahead 52-46 before Lynchburg stopped the bleeding with a bucket at the :28 second mark, their first basket in almost two minutes. That lead, however, wasn't enough as Lynchburg scored the first 10 points of the quarter en route to their 25 point frame.

The Green and Gold was led by Surles' 22 points on 9-17 shooting, but an efficient 4-6 from three. Tyler was once again close to her first double-double of the season, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.
