Roanoke, VA - In a rescheduled match from earlier this month, the Hollins tennis team welcomed Randolph-Macon to town for each team's regular season finale. The Yellow Jackets came into the afternoon having already wrapped up second place during the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) regular season while Hollins would need to pull off the upset to pull into an eighth place tie in the standings.
The Yellow Jackets pulled out a 2-1 lead after three competitive doubles matches. The duo of Kateri Johnson and Olivia Dannon ran their season mark to 6-3 (5-3 in ODAC play) with a 9-7 win at #3 doubles. Randolph-Macon would win at #1 and #2 to take an advantage into singles play.
In the individual matches, the Yellow Jackets won at #6 to increase their advantage and when Kate Woodruff was finally stopped at the top spot, 6-3 and 6-4, Macon had a 4-1 lead. For the third consecutive ODAC match to close out her senior season, Amelia Verkerk pulled Hollins to within 4-2 after closing out the #2 singles match by the score of 6-1 and 6-4. Randolph-Macon would win at #5 and #6 to secure the win with one last match to be finished. As was the case in a 7-2 win over Shenandoah less than 24 hours ago, Kateri Johnson would not go quietly at #3. Two matches back, Johnson won a third set tie-breaker to win at Virginia Wesleyan and won a second set tie-breaker yesterday against the Hornets. Today would be no different as the sophomore won the opening frame, 7-5, before falling, 3-6, in the second. Johnson fell behind 3-1 in the 10 point tie-breaker but tied it at 3-3 on the first change-over. She took four of the next six and led 7-5 as the two players changed sides once again. Johnson would not let up and sealed the win with three straight points, 10-5.
The match marked the last regular season match of the 2017-18 season. Hollins, picked 10th in the ODAC Preseason Poll, finished one spot ahead of their projected finish.
