Event: Soccer - Hollins at Sweet Briar (Sweet Briar, VA)

The lead: The Hollins soccer team looked to make it two in a row against their rivals from Sweet Briar. After defeating the Vixens in their home finale last season, Hollins made the trip to Sweet Briar looking for consecutive wins against their arch rivals.

The result: Hollins 3-2

How it happened: Hollins would out-shoot the Vixens 10-5 in a first half that saw the visitors take a 1-0 lead into the break. Just seconds into half number two, Madisen Charles took a pass from Miranda Springston to make it 2-0. About mid-way through the second half, Hollins would add to their lead and look to put away their hosts. Hollins would lead 3-0 with just over 17 minutes to play, however Sweet Briar would not go quietly, netting a pair of scores to cut the deficit to one with just minutes left to play. The Hollins defense would be up to the task and closed out the game, 3-2.

Hollins notes:

  • Mallory Jengo scored her team leading third goal to get the afternoon off to a good start
  • Springston assisted on each of the first two scores
  • For the second time this season, Paige Russell got credit for the game winning goal, tied for 2nd in the ODAC
  • Hollins would see an 18-11 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal

Sweet Briar notes:

  • Caroline Thomas gave up three goals while recording six saves
  • LaLa Martinez and Caylin Newman each scored for the Vixens
  • Sweet Brair has now lost to Hollins in back-to-back seasons fro the first time since Hollins won five in a row (2009-2013)

What's next: Hollins will return home for the first time since the first week of the season when they play host to William Peace on Tuesday at 3:00pm.
